چکیده

Given a finite set of vectors over a finite totally ordered domain, we study the problem of computing a constraint in conjunctive normal form such that the set of solutions for the produced constraint is identical to the original set. We develop an efficient polynomial-time algorithm for the general case, followed by specific polynomial-time algorithms producing Horn, dual Horn, and bijunctive constraints for sets of vectors closed under the operations of conjunction, disjunction, and median, respectively. We also consider the affine constraints, analyzing them by means of computer algebra. Our results generalize the work of Dechter and Pearl on relational data, as well as the papers by Hébrard and Zanuttini. They also complete the results of Hähnle et al. on multivalued logics and Jeavons et al. on the algebraic approach to constraints. We view our work as a step toward a complete complexity classification of constraint satisfaction problems over finite domains.

Consistency Techniques for Numeric CSPs

Many problems can be expressed in terms of a numeric constraint satisfaction problem over finite or continuous domains (numeric CSP). The purpose of this paper is to show that the consistency techniques that have been developed for CSPs can be adapted to numeric CSPs. Since the numeric domains are ordered the underlying idea is to handle domains only by their bounds. The semantics that have bee...

Robustness and Stability in Constraint Programming under Dynamism and Uncertainty - (Extended Abstract)

Many real life problems that can be solved by constraint programming, come from uncertain and dynamic environments. Because of the dynamism, the original problemmay change over time, and thus the solution found for the original problem may become invalid. For this reason, dealing with such problems has become an important issue in the fields of constraint programming. In some cases, there is ex...

A Fast Algorithm for the Bound Consistency of alldiff Constraints

Some n-ary constraints such as the alldiff constraints arise naturally in real fife constraint satisfaction problems (CSP). General purpose filtering algorithms could be applied to such constraints. By taking the semantics of the constraint into account, it is possible to design more efficient filtering algorithms. When the domains of the variables are totally ordered (e.g. all values are integ...

Solving Set Constraint Satisfaction Problems using ROBDDs

Constraint solvers typically maintain a domain of possible values for each variable that may form part of a solution to a constraint satisfaction problem. Historically, it has been thought impractical to represent precisely the domains of certain types of constrained variable, such as finite set variables. For example, the domain of a finite set variable which can take on the value of any subse...
